Summer Lighting Director

Big Top Chautauqua is a performing arts organization presenting a 60+ summer show season of touring artists (Ziggy Marley, Michael Franti, Bonnie Raitt, Shakey Graves and more), as well as original shows by our house band, the Blue Canvas Orchestra. Big Top Chautauqua operates a state-of-the-art canvas tent theater located on the base of Mt. Ashwabay Ski Hill, just south of Bayfield, Wisconsin.


The Lighting Director is responsible for the hang, focus and strike of the house rep plot; tour load-ins and load-outs, programming shows and operating console for each show as needed. This position reports to the Production Manager and Technical Director.


Specific duties include but may not be limited to:

  • Supervise all artistic decisions involving lighting always working cooperatively with Production Manager, Technical Director and guest artist production personnel.

  • Maintain lighting equipment and supplies for stage according to budget. This includes gels, lamps

and lighting supplies for tent.

  • Maintain/clean/repair  inventory of lighting equipment pre and post season along with Technical Director

  • Maintain up-to-date house lighting plot.

  • Maintain and update lighting cues in house show scripts; see that scripts are stored safely. Prepare for and participate in Blue Canvas Orchestra rehearsals according to schedule worked out with the Production Manager.

  • Communicate with touring artists regarding show lighting needs. Be prepared to hang and focus lights per their requests, program looks, busk shows and call spot cues as needed.

  • Assist stage crew in all load-ins and load-outs.

  • Assist in all areas as needed including audio set up, video set up, stage set up, etc.

  • Make arrangement for any needed equipment cleaning and/or storage at end of season in

coordination with Technical Director

  • Alert Facilities Manager to any physical needs or safety concerns requiring maintenance including electrical or structural concerns backstage or in tent.


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with and programming/busking conventional and led moving light rig for bands, theatrical performances, etc.

  • Experience programming Avolite Titan console

  • Experience climbing truss and being comfortable working at heights

  • Personal vehicles are encouraged as “The Tent” is not accessible by public transportation.


Employment Dates:

  • May 31 - October 9th ( Some flexibility in schedule allowed )

  • Work may be 40+ hours per week and will require weekend and evening work.
