Weekends September to Mid-October
Nestled between the Upper Peninsula towns of Ironwood and Bessemer, and Lake Superior sits Copper Peak - a ski flying structure rising 26 stories high, on top of a 360-foot ancient rock formation. Copper Peak is the only ski flying hill in the Western Hemisphere and the largest artificial slide in the world.
While the future of Copper Peak may hold more international ski flying competitions, today visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views the hill offers. The Copper Peak Adventure Ride brings visitors on an 800-foot chair lift and then and 18-story elevator to the main observation deck of this majestic structure. From there, the truly brave can walk 8 more stories to uppermost point. From this spectacular vista, you overlook over 2500 square miles, including parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and of course, Lake Superior. On a perfect day, you can even see the Canadian border.
Other activities in the Copper Peak area include: the Black River and its majestic falls surging towards Black River Harbor and Lake Superior, where you can find parks, campgrounds and more and the North Country National Scenic Trail cutting just to the north of the hill. Future plans include extensive mountain bike trails, birding and of course, ski jumping competitions.
