…a 20 minute ferry ride from Bayfield
A favorite activity for visitors to Bayfield is taking a ferry ride to the Town of La Pointe on Madeline Island. Just a 20 minute enjoyable ferry ride across Lake Superior, Madeline Island is indeed, a special place to visit and a great vacation activity to include in your list of “must dos.”
Madeline Island welcomes visitors with “turn of the century charm” as one of 22 Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. The Madeline Island Ferry crosses the water from spring break-up of the ice to late winter. Once on Madeline Island, visitors can explore the beautiful state and town parks whether driving, hiking, biking, or kayaking. Located seven miles from the ferry landing, Big Bay State Park features picturesque sandstone bluffs with nine miles of hiking trails. You can also enjoy Big Bay Town Park with its beach access, nature trails and a picnic area. Plus the 80 acre lagoon is ideal for kayaking, canoeing and fishing.
Also located on the island are a number of specialty shops plus a variety of restaurants for everyone’s appetite.
And Madeline Island offers visitors the area’s newest art and craft school, Madeline Island School of the Arts, located on a uniquely restored Wisconsin dairy farm in the middle of the island. You will find a full class schedule that offers painting, writing, quilting, photography and other unique workshops including basketry, drawing, jewelry, yoga, music Ojibway crafts, and scrapbooking.
