A great winter getaway with miles of cross country skiing trails
The swishing sound of your cross country skis cutting through the snow may be the only thing you hear when cross country skiing in the Bayfield area. The crisp whites of the birch trees and the snow contrast beautifully with the greens of the pines and evergreens. Enjoying this winter silent sport you are certain to see chickadees fleeting from branch to branch and you may hear the songs of the blue jays.
Northern Wisconsin cross country skiing is an invigorating yet calming experience. The Bayfield area offers a wide variety of groomed cross country and skating trails. These Northern Wisconsin ski trails are perfect for any cross country skill level. Just outside of Bayfield at the Jerry Jolly parking lot you have access to over 40 kilometers of groomed cross country ski trails. These cross country ski trails traverse a 160 acre parcel meandering through over one thousand acres of Bayfield County forest, Wisconsin’s Nourse Sugarbush natural area, and the Mt. Ashwabay Recreational Area. In addition, Mt. Ashwabay Ski area offers both cross country and alpine skiing in a magnificent setting with cross country ski trails featuring stunning views of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Chequamegon National Forest. Another option for cross country skiers is the Mt. Valhalla Winter Sports Area nestled in the Chequamegon National Forest. This area offers two sets of cross country ski trails developed and groomed by the U.S. Forest Service. Three loops of cross country ski trails run through red and jack pine forests and have magnificent views of the area. One trail is also groomed for skating.
