Job Description
Apostle Islands Booksellers is now accepting applications for the 2017 season. We are looking to fill 2-3 part-time bookseller positions. Hours will vary, but would range from 15-30 hours per week. Applicants must be available evenings, weekends, and holidays. Application and job descriptions can be picked up at Apostle Islands Booksellers any time Wednesday through Saturday from 10am-4pm. Please have resume and application turned in no later than April 1st, 2017.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Graciously welcomes and assists customers to locate books, sidelines and other items for sale in Bookstore, and, if the store does not have what they want in stock, helps them to place a special order or directs them to satisfactory alternatives (either in Bookstore or from other sources); maintains current knowledge of inventory.
  • Performs retail sales activities on a point-of-sale system
  • Works with customers to handle customer complaints, returns, exchanges and other issues in accordance with established store policy, advises customers of the status of books on order and assists customers in obtaining new and used books from other sources.
  • Knows regular customers by name and becomes familiar with their book and merchandise preferences.
  • Assists with restocking shelves and displays.
  • Helps to organize and staff special events.
  • Participates in staff meetings.
  • Opens or closes Bookstore in accordance with detailed procedures.
  • Maintains the storeroom and front Bookstore service area in a neat and orderly manner; ensures orderliness and cleanliness of inventory.
  • Performs other related duties as needed. 
IDEAL CANDIDATE CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Intelligent, responsible and honest person who enjoys people and can interact tactfully, respectfully and engagingly with the public.
  • Previous bookstore, customer-service or retail experience strongly preferred.
  • Is strongly inclined toward customer service and support without being in any way pushy or overbearing.
  • Has good problem-solving skills.
  • Is self-directed and able to work independently while also having the ability to maintain cooperative and respectful working relationships as part of the Bookstore team.
  • Has sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.
  • Likes to have fun at work, has natural curiosity and enjoys books and learning.
  • Is physically able to lift and carry boxes of books (20-40 lbs.) by hand up and down stairs and to climb on stools and ladders to restock and straighten shelves.
  • Has strong computer skills and is able to operate the POS system
  • Has willingness to follow written and oral instructions and to seek help or advice from other staff when needed. 
HOURS
From mid-May through mid-October, the Bookstore will be open seven days a week. Late May through June we’re open 9am-7pm. July and August hours will be 9am-9pm. September hours will be 9am-7pm, and October 10am-5pm.
