Women of Madeline Island Speaker’s Series: Marina Lachecki - Madeline Island Museum
"Queen of the Manse, Housewife, Starter of the Loom House: Velma Schroedel"
Free and Open to the Public
In the early 1950's, Velma Watson Schroedel, wife of Rev. Otto Schroedel, pastor of St. John's Church on Madeline Island from 1951–1963, discovered an inkle loom in the attic of St. John's parsonage. She taught herself how to weave, and began to teach others.
The rest — Woods Hall Gallery and Studios — is history.
Marina Lachecki will share stories of Velma's life, through the eyes of her family and islanders, and her remarkable life and gift to Madeline Island.
Marina Lachecki is pastor at St. John's on the Island, and a lover of cultural, folk and natural histories of the north country. She has collected Island stories for over two decades.
