Name: True-Life Northwoods Crime Thriller Program at Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center
Date: May 14, 2017
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM CDT
Event Description:
Award-winning Cable author, James Brakken, will present his latest book, Alias Ray Olson: The Complete Story Behind the 1939 Chequamegon Forest Manhunt. Brakken’s novel is based closely on 1939 newspaper reports, interviews, and court documents.
“Olson was known to have tampered with illegal slot machines in area taverns,” said
Brakken. “He became a significant character in Wisconsin’s “gangster history” in June, 1939, when he was accused by a sheriff’s deputy of using stolen license plates. After a downtown Hayward car chase, he escaped by taking to the woods along the Namakagon River, northeast of town. Later, near the Chippewa Flowage, two deputized citizens assisting the Sawyer County sheriff were shot and killed. Accused, Olson took to the woods, beginning Wisconsin’s largest
ever manhunt. The two-week ordeal saw a ragtag posse of over 200 deputized citizens, sheriff departments from four counties, and the FBI hunting for Olson in the Chequamegon Forest,” Brakken added. This program is free to attend. Books will be available for purchase.
